Thursday night Western Kentucky fell to Central Arkansas (35-28) in a disappointing start to the Tyson Helton era. Here are some of my thoughts-
The passing game
Thursday night WKU starting QB Steven Duncan totaled 26-of-39 passes for 304 yards and a TD along with a touchdown carry of his own in his 6th career start for the Hilltoppers. Duncan also threw 2 interceptions.
Was I the only one wanting to give Ty Storey a series in the 4th quarter? I see why Helton didn’t make the switch, but I wonder if the outcome would have been the same with Storey out there. After the result of this game it is obvious the QB position is still wide open in Bowling Green.
The rushing attack
WKU RB Gaej Walker rushed for 152 yards on 19 carries and 2 touchdowns including a 68-yard score on his first touch. Walker was a DB on last years squad and I think his future is bright here on the Hill.
DE DeAngelo Malone recorded 8 tackles and 1.5 sacks in his 15th start. Malone was a bright spot all night long. UCA began to run their offense to the opposite side of Malone as the game wore on.
Where WKU began to struggle was in the pass game. WKU gave up 222 yards receiving to UCA WR Lujuan Winningham. Pass defense needs to be addressed before FIU next Saturday.
Stick with this team. It’s a long season and we’re only 1 game in. I don’t think we have our answer at QB yet, but when we do the rest will fall in place.
Now you know my thoughts, I want to hear yours!
