The wait is over for WKU Football fans. We’ve had plenty of coverage on Western Kentucky and what to expect for the 2019 season, but now it’s time to get to know the opponent – Central Arkansas.

History

The University of Central Arkansas is located in, you guessed it, Central Arkansas in the town of Conway, Arkansas the 7th most populist city in the state (58,900) – and was founded in 1872. Their colors are purple and white and their mascot is a bear named Bruce D. Bear. Intimidating I know.

UCA is a public research university, one of the oldest in the state. Arkansas State Normal School, as it was founded in 1907 has been the primary source of teachers in the state of Arkansas. Since changing their name to The University of Central Arkansas they are now known for education, nursing, physical therapy, business, and preforming arts. UCA currently has around 11,500 students.

Noteable Alumni

UCA has some noteable alumni as well:

  • Scottie Pippen– Most known for his time with Michael Jordan during the Chicago Bulls dynasty of the 1990’s. Winning 6 titles, setting the NBA record for wins in a season at the time (72), 7 time NBA all star and member of the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame. Pippen attended UCA from 1983-1987.
  • Kris Allen– A singer/ songwriter from Conway, Arkansas Allen attended UCA in the early 2000’s. You may know Allen from this hit in 2009-
  • Willie Davis– Spent 8 seasons in the NFL playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Oilers, and Tennessee Titans. He is now a scout for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Football

UCA competes in the Southern Conference, alongside teams including the New Orleans Privateers, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and the Southeastern Louisiana Lions.

Central Arkansas is 1-0 in the all time series vs. Western Kentucky winning in 2009 (28-7).

Nathan Brown will lead the Bears into the Houch in his second season at the helm finishing 2018 with a (7-6) record the Bears look to improve from a year ago. Losing 17 Seniors from 2018 the odds are stacked against them this season. Their starting Quarterback is coming off a broken ankle vs. Sam Houston State from a year ago.

The game is set to Kick off at 6:30 PM in Bowling Green at Houchens Industries–L. T. Smith Stadium. Tickets can still be purchased here.

WKU Football’s 1st opponent Central Arkansas Preview

Last season the bears averaged 30.5 points per game. They averaged 145 yards rushing each game last season. While passing they threw for 262 yards per game. They averaged over 400 yards of total offense each game. While in the red-zone a season ago they scored over 75% of the time. They scored 47% of the time in the red-zone. They saw multiple guys see games at quarterback last season. All of them saw success on the field when given the opportunity to play.Carlos Blackman led the bears in rushing a season ago with 809 yards. Luke Hales was one of many quarterbacks who saw the field a season ago but lead the team in passing yards with 1857 yards.

On defense last year the bears gave up 26 points per game. They gave up 111 yards on the ground and 16 touchdowns. While though the air they gave up 290 yards a game and 19 touchdowns. While teams would average 7.5 yards per competition. Teams averaged over 400 yards per game against UCA. When teams got to the red-zone they score points on 85% of the time, Touchdowns’ they got six points 61% of the time. Juan Jackson lead the bears defense in tackles with 91 ( 67 solo and 24 assisted).

With these stats from a season ago they saw a record of 6-5 playing 1 FBS team on that schedule. After looking over the stats from a season ago this game won’t be a cake walk like some other FCS games of the past.

Going into the 2019 season UCA is breaking in a new defense coordinator Chad Williams. He was on the staff last season for them as the safeties and nickel backs.
