After getting the 2nd win of the season last weekend, is it to early to start talking about WKU going to a bowl game? Well a one of the college football “experts” believe this WKU can make a bowl this season. Since picking up the 2nd Conference USA win last weekend and being on top of the Conference USA east division. Is it likely WKU can make a bowl game?

Image via BG Daily News| Austin Anthony

After the second week of college football ESPN FPI has changed their numbers on who they believe will win each game. WKU is now favored in 5 of the remaining 10 games (UAB, ODU, Charlotte, FAU and MTSU). This jump is from the win last week so if WKU can win again this week you might see another game or 2 show WKU as a favorite. This is the only metric that we have to see where the computer believe the winner will be.

  • Week 3 vs Louisville is 22.5%
  • Week 4 vs UAB is 72.1%
  • Week 5 at ODU is 75.5%
  • Week 6 vs Army is 36.8%
  • Week 7 vs Charlotte is 73.0%
  • Week 8 at Marshall is 20.3%
  • Week 9 vs FAU is 55.4%
  • Week 10 at Arkansas is 26.1%
  • Week 11 Southern Miss is 30.1%
  • Week 12 vs MTSU is 51.9%

If this was the way it was to play out how would you view the season?

Football is Back! | WKU Connection

Tonight starts the college football season with 2 games, Florida vs Miami at Camping World Stadium in Orlando Fl. And Arizona at Hawaii.

Both games will kick off the 150th season of college football.

A quick breakdown of each game starting with Florida and Miami.

This is a rivalry game between 2 Sunshine State teams looking for bragging rights. Florida comes into the game after having a good season last year in Dan Mullen’s first year at Florida going 10-3 and a Peach Bowl victory. Expectations are high for the Gators as they come into this game ranked preseason number #8.

Miami on the other hand went 7-6 a season ago. Mark Richt decided to step down as head coach for the Hurricanes and his defensive coordinator took over as head coach Manny Diaz. The betting line is -7.5 Florida with an over/under of 47.

The other game tonight is Arizona vs Hawaii, this game is expected to have lots of points. Hawaii is coming off an 8-6 season with high expectations this season and wants to start it off right with a win.

Arizona is in a different setting right now after a 5-7 season a year ago in Kevin Sumlin’s 1st season as head coach. Khalil Tate is hopefully going to put up video game like numbers as he did in 2018 season this year. The betting line for this game is Arizona -11.5 and the over/under is 73.5.

ESPN’s FPI Prediction For WKU Football

ESPN’s FPI (football power index) gives each game a percentage chance of both teams and who they believe will win from statistics. So I will go game by game and give what ESPN believes what WKU chances are to win.

  • Week 1 vs Central Arkansas 89.7%
  • Week 2 at FIU 27.9%
  • Week 3 vs Louisville 33.2%
  • Week 4 vs UAB 65.3%
  • Week 5 at ODU 79.2%
  • Week 6 vs Army 42.6%
  • Week 7 vs Charlotte 79.2%
  • Week 8 at Marshall 27.2%
  • Week 9 vs FAU 54.2%
  • Week 10 at Arkansas 22.4%
  • Week 11 Southern Mississippi 34.0%
  • Week 12 vs Middle Tennessee 63.4%

If the games went as the ESPN FPI says we would see a 6-6 record, with this record we would find the team in a bowl game. This would be a great advancement from where WKU Football was a season ago. These percentages change before each game and during each game to give a better idea of who sound win based on statistics.

image via @NBASUMMERLEAGUE on twitter

With all 32 teams playing 4 games though the last 8 days, there will be an 8 team tournament for teams giving a chance to win the NBA Summer League championship while the other 24 teams get 1 consolation game.

After his 4 games, only playing in 3 with the Memphis Grizzlies Ben Lawson averaged 12.3 minutes per game, 6.3 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game. If he can help his team win the summer league title it will give him 3 more games to show off his skill set in hopes of making 1 of the 30 NBA training camps. His next game will be Saturday at 3:30 vs Boston Celtics on ESPN.

During Darius Thompson 4 games with the Toronto Raptors he showed improvements each game and in game 4 was able to start. While on the court he averaged 4.3 points per game, 2.5 rebounds per game and 1 steal per game while only play 12.3 minutes per game. With the improvement shown though the 4 games Darius might see himself working his way into a possible G-League team. The Raptors will have 1 more game today at 3:00 on ESPN U against the Philadelphia 76ers.

3 Year Review of the Rick Stansbury era | WKU Connection

Though the 3rd year of Rick Stansbury era as the Head Coach of Western Kentucky, we have had some big wins. During this time we have had the best recruiting classes in WKU history. Recruiting the state of Kentucky very well in this season having 6 players on the current roster. Half of them being a former Mr. Basketball. He has led us to 7 wins over power 5 schools, Back to back conference title game appearances, an NIT Final Four appearance, and lots of exciting atmospheres in Diddle. Over his 3 seasons at WKU Stansbury has a posted a record of 62-42 for a win percentage of (.596)

With all of this success, it is a make or break year for Rick Stansbury to make it to the NCAA Tournament? With having loads of talent returning from a 20 win team a season ago. Being that it has been 7 years since WKU has heard their named called on Selection Sunday. And as of right now Joe Lunardi of ESPN Bracketology has WKU as the 12 seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament.

With this I ask you, what are you expectations for WKU Basketball this season?
